Challenges

Disturbances:

One of the challenges on the proposed Gorst Watershed, was keeping trespassers out. The Bremerton Police Department had review the surveillance and had found people to be trespassing on the property. The police posted an image including one with a man with a gun and a toddler on his shoulders which seemed to clear the trespassing issue. However, any disturbance to the filtration of the watershed can have the license revoke because the purity could effect the water supply for the city of Bremerton. Keeping the property off-limits to the public prevents the city to pay for a filtration system to be installed, which was quoted to be $30 million (Farley, 2014). Consequently, disturbances within the watershed area may cause detrimental effects to the surrounding water bodies and streams overall quality. Though, there is a surrounding forest cover which reduces erosion because of high infiltration capacity in the sub-stream flow, the vegetation is also protected with no disturbances.  These disturbances are only for a short period of time but the ecosystem of the watershed would need recover in time so nothing harmful comes from it in the future (Ayivor & Gordon 2012).

  1. Wow Samara, what an insight. I have to admit that I was amazed that they manage to keep trespassers out of the area. It seems to me that in 2019 there is no more locked up land areas unless they are privately owned. However, it makes me happy that they intent to do so, and that the city of Bremerton can save so much money, "just" by keeping visitors away. I believe it is justified.
